APP Words: Doodles 2

I was inspired to do some more doodles after I flicked through my Pinterest board and stumble upon the work by. I wanted to develop some of my previous doodles, especially where I had done the words "good morning beautiful," "anything can happen" and "you can do it" because I think that those are really motivational and full of positive thoughts. 

Works in Progress

After some thought I realised that maybe "good morning beautiful" might not be adequate for a unisex design, because it might appear to be too feminine. I then moved onto writing out the words "good morning sweet" as I want it to tie in with sugar cubes, but even then... Well, not everyone drinks tea in the mornings, and I want my design to be used throughout the day.

Anything Can Happen

This led me on to the development of "anything can happen", and I've taken pictures to show my process. I was inspired by a video on YouTube and Sean Wes' work where they had written out a phrase then worked from the middle outwards. I first drew out my banner, wrote my quote, figured out where the middle of each word was, and then moved on from there. 

APP Home (AOI): Final Sketch

After doing all of my compositions I settled on the idea of the road going around the border of the image, with the Big Ben, Westminster Bridge and the London Eye in the corners and running alongside it.
I start by drawing lots of little lines leading off the dot in the centre, just so that I could lie out my perspective. Then I drew my buildings according to these lines and drew an outline of my characters.

Conclusion:
Now that this is done and all of the character's are in place I can take it to the final drawing, which I hope to do in more detail so that I could scan it in and work on painting it digitally. This is because I want to create an amalgamation of both digital and traditional media.

APP Home (AOI): Sketching London Landmarks

Looking at my research that I had done previously, I picked out and printed some of the key landmarks that I wanted to include in my illustration and drew right next to them. 

I also made small annotations next to my sketches and photos that I needed to take into consideration when drawing my final image.

Conclusion:

I realised that not all of the chosen buildings would fit on the page so I decided to leave out the Sea life centre. This is so that I would have more space for the characters and I also wanted to include some form of transport into the piece. 

The most difficult building to draw (even though they would all be quite challenging) would be the big Ben and Westminster Palace, because they are incredibly detailed. I haven’t drawn buildings before so I would need to make sure I draw them as accurately as possible… Although hopefully people wouldn’t mind if I missed out a thing or two!

FMP: Idea 3 (Continued)

As I mentioned in my last post I have decided to pick one of my ideas to develop it to lead it onto a final idea. Once I have this done I could then look at the other pieces that I mentioned I'd design in my proposal.

As I've mentioned in my little notes I want to make the castle more elaborate, because right now it's got a basic form and as this would be the main focal point (as well as my main typeface) then I want to make it look as good as it can be.

So I've created a mood board for some castle inspiration, starting by first looking again at Neuschwanstein castle as it happens to be the most beautiful castle I've ever seen and looks as if it has come right out of a fairy tale.

Here's a little picture of what I'm working on right now! I did actually start this a couple of weeks back and worked on it whenever I got the chance. Today I have finally finished doing the biro details around the main character.

I'm a bit stuck on what to do for the background though... Ho hum.

Business Card Design - Sketches and Design

When I phoned up my client to ask them about the business card, they really knew exactly what they wanted on it; they wanted the logo to be centred on the back on a black background, with the shattered glass type on the other side with their contact number and Facebook page directly underneath.
This made it much easier for me to go through the designing process although I did some sketches previously so that I was "prepared" for when I called them.

The Final Design

LizJOwen - Metallic Grunge Type

I did some experimenting with layer styles in Photoshop today because I wanted to start playing around with different typefaces (as the main focus is on typography after all). I used this tutorial that I found by typing "grunge type tutorials" and I thought it would be really good to use in future.
I took some screenshots because it's a bit of a habit now, and I also want to show you how I did it step-by-step. It wasn't really necessary as you could easily just look at the tutorial... But oh well!

I first start by creating a new document at 72dpi and 1800x1300px. I filled in the background layer with black and then created a new layer - Grunge Brushes - and just took a couple of the brushes and dotted them around, varying with different styles to create more texture.

Typographic Walk Poster - WIP

I had a massive panic attack today when I thought about how I'm lacking in material for my portfolio as I had lost all of my work from last year. So today is the first day that I'm going to go through all of my old projects and re-do them to make them look more professional.

Here's the first of my old projects: The Typographic Walk. I've changed this dramatically from the old version but... I like it, even though it's completely different. In my brief I actually had to use pieces of type from different places (like buildings, bins etc) and create a poster with all of the type, but because I had lost all of those photos I couldn't reuse them. This is the main reason I changed the whole thing; the photos of type were extremely pixelated.

What I'm Currently Working On

Seeing as I'm planning on using this blog a lot more - as well as my Tumblr page - I may as well update y'all on this piece that I'm currently working on.

Hopefully I'll finish it by the end of this week as well as starting out on my editorial illustration for my uni project.

Update

Okay so today my laptop really has messed up; Google Chrome isn't loading and neither is Word and my Pictures.. Kinda sucks seeing as it's so damn slow as well :/ I can't wait to get my MAC properly set up!

BUT there is a problem with my new mac; my tablet doesn't work on it ;_; I guess my tablet is just too old as it only works on vista :/ fml. Eurgh. So I guess that when this laptop dies I can no longer do digitally art until I get the money to save up for a new tablet >_<"

I guess there is a good side to it though, because then I could focus more on traditional art instead of wasting my time in front of a computer screen :/ Still a bit annoyed though >_<"

Anyways, here's a sneak preview of my commission~ I've finally finished the sketch! Just a few more lil' details need to be added like on the book ^^
