Live Music Brief & Learning Outcomes Analysis

As usual, I have taken parts of the design brief and the learning outcomes that I find are the most important key points. I would have to abide to every one of these key points in order to come out with a successful project.

  •  …create an identity and CD cover
  •    …which must include a logo. This should be applied in the first instance to a business card.
  • You are also to design a CD cover and CD label for your client
  • Please note that you will be assessed on the typographic module
The first things I have highlighted are the ones that I would definitely have to design, and they are what I’ll be assessed on; a CD cover, logo, and business card. This means that I would need to create mood boards as inspiration and perhaps look at templates for CD covers so that I can create one that I could easily find a case for. There hasn’t been a format provided in this design brief so it’s really important that I find the right one myself.

I haven’t really created logos before so I guess I will need to do a lot of research on them!
Despite having to design all of these covers, logos and business cards I need to pay special attention to the typographic part as it is – after all – a typographic module.
Another thing I would like to add is that I need to pay special attention to what kind of music group my band will be; would they be a rock band, pop, jazz… All of the designs must relate to them. I would need to keep in regular contact with my client and make sure that I have some .mp3 files of their music so that I could listen to them to “get to know them” a bit more.

Now that the design brief is done, onto the learning outcomes!

  • An increased awareness of the constraints of a design brief
  • Developed a deeper understanding and evaluation of solutions to a design brief that encompass set criteria.
  • Increased awareness of the history of typography including traditional typographic terminology and how it has been adapted to modern technology.
  • Developed a greater awareness of the connotations of typeface choice and be able to justify decisions across a wide range of applications.
  • Developed an increasing awareness of contemporary typographic trends and innovative developments.

These learning outcomes are quite simple: I need to make sure that I stick to the design brief and understand it; I know about the connotations of the chosen typeface in my designs as they could portray a different idea entirely; and I need to know about contemporary typographic trends. To know about the trends I could produce a mood board to see what’s “in the now” and what’s in fashion.
It’s quite hard when it comes to knowing typographic terminology because I had already done my research for the anatomy of type and the development of it. I would need to discuss this with my lecturer.

  • Developed their ability to solve design problems within the structure of a design brief.
  • Developed awareness of the concepts and practice of graphic design needed to underpin the creative process.
  • Applied the practice of thorough and relevant research as an aid to the development of individual creativity.Begun to understand and use skill, and critical judgement when choosing and using type, which will allow creative freedom in their design solutions.

Now these learning outcomes are more about how I handle the overall project. Research is a key point in this as they have stressed that I would need to do a sufficient amount of research so that I could understand my client as well as to help me with my designing process. Type has, once again, been mentioned in the bottom bullet point, as it’s very important to choose the right one for my design.

To summarise I would need to:
  • Do a sufficient amount of research – mood boards, music genres, typographic trends
  • Make sure that my design reflects the music group’s personality
  • Design a CD cover, label, logo and business card
  • Understand the design brief and what it’s asking for
  • Focus more on type

Conclusion:
I find it so much easier to analyse the design brief and the learning outcomes like this because I could break it down into small parts and then point out the key pieces of information. Because everything important has been highlighted and are in bullet points I could easily refer back and go straight to them instead of reading through my whole analysis.
